Taste Treats & Food Items:

An "All You Can Eat Breakfast" of pancakes, sausage and eggs will be served on Saturday April 4th from 6:00 to 9:30 am

A traditional verenika meal and a windsor loin meal will be served from 11:00-1:30 on Saturday. Funnel cakes, ice cream sundaes, pork sandwiches, New Year's Cookies and other items to tempt your taste buds will also be served.

Ethnic Foods: 

If you enjoy good food this is the place to comes. On Friday evening and all day Saturday snack on New Year's Cookies (Portzilka). The name means "tumbling over". They are raisin fritters that are rolled in granulated sugar and are traditionally made especially for New Year's Day. Approximately three to four thousand are sold each year.

The Verenika dinner served at noon on Saturday consists of verenika, gravy, ham, pluma mos, zwieback, jelly, butter, coffee and tea. Verenika is a cheese pocket. They are made from a noodle type dough that is cut into circles. A filling of cottage cheese, eggs and salt and pepper is placed on the circle and folded over and the edges are sealed. They are then either boiled or fried and served with ham and a cream based gravy. Each year 36 people, from Bethesda Mennonite Church in Henderson, NE, make 4500 verenika on the Monday prior to the sale. They work from 8:00 am till 2:30 pm and use 250 pounds of cottage cheese, 40 dozen eggs, 175 pounds of flour, 20 gallons of cream and 250 pounds of hams. Pluma Mos is a fruit soup that is made up of prunes and raisins in a cream based sauce. Zwieback are rolls that consist of a ball of dough with another smaller ball placed on top of the first one. They serve approximately 750 to 800 meals each year.

Priced Foods:

Zwieback, breads, dried fruit, jellies, canned meat, sweet rolls, tea rolls, noodles, peppernuts, pies and salsa are only a few of the items that you will find in the Priced Foods booth. You may also purchase smoked pork chops and pork sausage here. The booth opens at 4:00 pm on Friday and is again open at 8:00 pm on Saturday.

Soup Supper will be on Friday evening beginning at 4:00 pm and continuing until 7:30 pm. You may enjoy homemade vegetable and chili soup served with your choice of homemade pies and homemade bread and jellies.
